In the Ngorongoro Highlands – tucked away from the main tourist trails – lies Mysigio Seasonal Camp. The location is magnificent, set in the heart of ‘massai country’ with ancient forests and stunning views. Yet being only 20 minutes drive from the Crater Rim means that its possible to get down into the crater for an early game drive – the camp crew can arrange a packed breakfast for those who want to make sure they don’t miss any of the action.
The camp is seasonal – this means we have the opportunity to make it far more comfortable than a mobile camp – the tents are vast – each with a roomy en suite bathroom boasting twin basins and a large shower. The tents have ‘caravan style’ flush toilets and traditional bucket showers. Dining is in a uniquely designed mess tent which can be closed up during the cool evenings or opened up for an al fresco feel for breakfast and lunch.
The Lounge tent is a place to relax – tea and coffee are constantly available, and comfortable chairs mean it is somewhere to congregate and talk over the events of the day. Board games and a selection of books are on hand and during the day chairs are set outside to enjoy the fresh mountain air.
One of the unique advantages of Mysigio is the opportunity to get out of the car and to do something active. Whether its a short walk from camp or a longer day hike in the hills, stopping to talk to cow herders or just marvelling at the stunning vistas across the Serengeti Plains. The camp is also perfectly places to access the Serengeti via the rarely used Nabitat road.
We have had a camp in the area for nearly 20 years and have built up a strong bond with the Massai in the area, helping to build classrooms and a library for the local primary school. The local chief will join guest for dinner to talk about his life and the challenges he faces guiding his village carefully into the 21st century. Each evening in camp there will be a cultural encounter of some kind, it may be an Olpul – a massai meat festival, perhaps some local dancers or a visit to the local village or school. These events are staged in a sensitive manner – no cameras until a relationship has been established.
Mysigio cultural activities offer a fantastic insight into a vanishing lifestyle.
