5 Day "Angata Kiti" (Green Season Dec-June)

This itinerary, on the edge of the Serengeti Plains, is normally combined with a longer classic game viewing safari Although it is a fully walking itinerary, there is always vehicle support and people can walk as much or as little as they wish, the hardiest walkers need never get in the car. Camp is moved with pick-up trucks.

Day 1: Angata Kiti Camp One. We begin with a visit to the famous Olduvai Gorge. Here we can meet with the resident anthropologist for a walk in the gorge and interpretation about the anthropological finds. There is also an onsite museum we can visit.; Lunch at Olduvai. After a short drive, walk to our private Wilderness Camp for your first night of the Walking Safari.

Day 2: Angata Kiti Camp One. Behind this camp there is a huge gorge that takes you into the Ol'daing Hills. The gorge has deep-water pools that support a variety of bird life and there is an "olpul" site where traditional Maasai feast on meat. We often have the opportunity to join one of there ceremonies on our way into the hills. Strong hikers can climb the 2000 ft to the top of the hills for stunning views and hike an all day circuit back to camp. Some people may wish to just explore the gorge, or spend the afternoon with the Maasai. There are many walking options and the day can be tailored to all levels of walking interest.

Day 3: Angata Kiti Camp Two. Walk from camp onto a large open short grass plain. From here the route to camp follows the base of a 1500-foot high ridge. A couple hours walking along the short grass plains brings you to a huge gorge splitting the ridge. A Lunch with cold drinks and fresh baked goodies is set up in the cool gorge. After lunch hike along the base of the ridge into camp, or climb up the gorge and traverse the ridge, to descend a different gorge directly into camp.

Day 4: Angata Kiti Camp Three. Today cross the short grass plains of the Angata Kiti valley where plains game is usually abundant. Or you can drive across the plain and spend more time hiking to the “cave where the sun never shines” a Maasai secret site, and then through the adjacent hills to camp.

Day 5: Lodge or Luxury Camp. This is one of the most outstanding days of your hike. Start hiking from camp on the high short grass plains. A few hours from camp descend into the famous Olkarian Gorge that has been featured in films showing its nesting vulture population. Descend through the beautiful and cool gorge to the mouth where the cars will meet you and take you either to your ongoing luxury safari camp, or to a lodge at Ngorongoro Crater. During this walk you will have an African Environments Walking Safari guide and his assistant. There will also be two Maasai guides from the Angata Kiti area who will accompany you to help answer questions you may have about their culture and way of life, and, an armed ranger from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area will also hike with us.
